The Complete Glossary of Button Terms Every Designer and Buyer Should Know

Whether you're a fashion designer specifying trims for a new collection, a production manager placing a wholesale order, or a passionate maker sourcing hardware for a bespoke project — the language of buttons matters. Miscommunication over a single term can result in the wrong shank height, an incompatible finish, or a failed compliance test.

This glossary defines every key term you'll encounter when working with buttons professionally, organized alphabetically for easy reference.


A

AQL (Acceptable Quality Level)

A statistical standard used in quality control to define the maximum number of defective units considered acceptable in a production batch. AQL 2.5 is the most common standard for fashion hardware — meaning no more than 2.5% of units in a sample may be defective before the batch is rejected.

Attachment

The method by which a button is secured to fabric. Common attachment methods include sewing (for sew-through and shank buttons), riveting (for tack buttons), and snapping (for snap fasteners).


B

Back Mark

Text or symbols molded or stamped onto the back of a button, often indicating the manufacturer, material, or country of origin. Back marks are used by collectors and buyers to authenticate vintage or premium buttons.

Bail

A loop or ring on the back of a button used for attachment — functionally similar to a shank but typically larger and used on decorative or statement buttons.

Blank

An unfinished button that has been cut or cast to shape but not yet polished, plated, or decorated. Blanks are the starting point for custom button production.

Button Card

A display card onto which buttons are sewn or attached for retail presentation or sample submission. Standard button cards hold 6 or 12 buttons.

Buttonhole

Casting

Corozo (Tagua Nut)

A natural, sustainable button material derived from the seed of the South American tagua palm. Corozo is dense, dye-receptive, and often used as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic. It has a smooth, ivory-like appearance.

Covered Button

A button whose face is covered with fabric, typically matching or complementing the garment. Common in bridal wear, couture, and tailored jackets.


D

Debossing

A surface decoration technique in which a design, logo, or text is pressed into the button surface, creating a recessed impression. Contrast with embossing.

Die Casting

A high-pressure casting method in which molten metal is forced into a steel mold (die) under pressure. Produces highly consistent, detailed buttons at scale. Most zinc alloy fashion buttons are die-cast.

Diameter

Electroplating

Face

Finish

The surface treatment applied to a button after forming. Common finishes include: gold plating, silver plating, antique brass, gunmetal, matte black, and rose gold. Finish affects appearance, durability, and compliance.

Fly Button

A button used on trouser or jeans fly closures. Typically a tack or jeans button with a prong attachment system.


G

Gunmetal

Half Ball Button

Horn Button

Hole Count

I

Incoterms

International commercial terms (e.g., FOB, CIF, EXW) that define the responsibilities of buyer and seller in international shipments. Relevant when importing buttons from overseas suppliers.

Iridescence

The optical property of shifting color when viewed from different angles, caused by light interference. Characteristic of mother-of-pearl and certain shell buttons.

Jeans Button (Tack Button)

A heavy-duty button used on denim and workwear, attached by a metal tack that pierces the fabric and locks into a back plate — no sewing required. Also called a rivet button.


L

Lacquer Coating

A clear or tinted protective coating applied over a button's finish to prevent tarnishing, scratching, or color fading. Common on gold and antique brass finishes.

Ligne (L)

The traditional unit of button measurement, originating in French tailoring. 1 ligne = 0.635 mm. A 24L button = 15 mm diameter. Ligne is abbreviated as L or lin and remains the industry standard for specifying button size.

Logo Button

A button featuring a brand's logo, monogram, or trademark, typically embossed or debossed on the face. Requires a custom mold and minimum order quantities.


M

Metal Shank Button

A button with a solid face and a metal loop or post on the back for sewing attachment. The shank elevates the button above the fabric surface, allowing the buttonhole layer to sit smoothly. Standard for outerwear, blazers, and bags.

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

The smallest quantity a supplier will produce or sell in a single order. MOQs vary by supplier type: stock items may have no MOQ; custom logo buttons may require 1,000–10,000+ pieces.

Mother-of-Pearl (MOP)

The iridescent inner lining of mollusk shells, cut and polished into buttons. Available in white, black (Tahitian), gold, and pink tones. The hallmark of luxury dress shirts and bridal wear.

Mold / Die

The steel tool used to cast or stamp buttons into shape. Custom molds are required for unique shapes or logo buttons. Mold costs are typically a one-time tooling fee paid by the buyer.


N

Nickel-Free

A compliance designation indicating that a button's finish contains no nickel or releases nickel below the EU threshold (0.5 μg/cm²/week for skin-contact items). Required for sensitive skin applications and EU market compliance.


O

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

An independent certification system that tests textile and accessory products for harmful substances. Buttons certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 are tested for heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticides, and pH levels.

Overrun / Underrun

The quantity variance above or below the ordered amount that a factory ships. Standard tolerance is ±5–10%. Buyers should agree on acceptable overrun/underrun in writing before production.


P

Patina

The natural surface change that develops on metal or horn buttons over time through oxidation and wear. Patina is considered desirable on antique brass and horn buttons, adding character and depth.

Pre-Production Sample (PPS)

A sample produced before bulk manufacturing begins, used to confirm that the button meets all specifications. The PPS must be approved by the buyer before production proceeds.

Prong / Tack

The metal pin used to attach jeans buttons and snap fasteners to fabric without sewing. The prong pierces the fabric and is crimped or locked into a back plate.


R

REACH

EU regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) that restricts hazardous substances in products sold in the European market. Relevant for button plating chemicals and dyes.

Resin Button

A button made from synthetic polyester or acrylic resin. Resin can mimic the appearance of horn, shell, or stone at lower cost. Widely used in fast fashion and mid-market garments.


S

Self-Shank (Tunnel Shank)

A shank molded from the same material as the button body, forming an integrated loop on the back. Common in plastic, resin, and horn buttons.

Sew-Through Button (Flat Button)

A button with 2 or 4 holes through which thread is passed to attach it directly to fabric. The most common button type globally. Suitable for light to medium-weight fabrics.

Shank

The attachment mechanism on the back of a button — a loop, post, or tunnel through which thread is passed. Shanks elevate the button above the fabric, accommodating the thickness of the buttonhole layer.

Shank Height

The distance between the base of the button and the top of the shank loop, measured in mm. Shank height must be matched to fabric thickness: thin fabrics need 1–2 mm; heavy outerwear needs 5–6 mm.

Snap Fastener

A two-part closure consisting of a ball (male) and socket (female) that press together. Not technically a button, but often categorized alongside button hardware in trim sourcing.

Stamping

A manufacturing process in which flat sheet metal is pressed into shape using a die. Stamped buttons are thinner and lighter than cast buttons, with crisper edges. Common for sew-through metal buttons.


T

Thread Shank

A shank created during sewing by wrapping thread around the stitches between the button and fabric, creating a stem. Used when attaching sew-through buttons to thick fabrics to allow the buttonhole layer to sit flat.

Toggle Button

An elongated, cylindrical button — typically made from wood, horn, or resin — used with a loop closure rather than a buttonhole. Classic on duffle coats and knitwear.

TOP (Top of Production)

A sample taken from the beginning of a bulk production run, submitted to the buyer for final approval before the full shipment is released. The TOP confirms that bulk production matches the approved pre-production sample.

Trochus Shell

A type of sea snail shell used to make durable, creamy-white buttons. One of the most commonly used shell materials for dress shirt buttons due to its hardness and consistent color.


W

Wash Fastness

A measure of how well a button's finish withstands laundering. Buttons with poor wash fastness may tarnish, discolor, or corrode after washing — a common cause of customer returns. Always test buttons through your standard wash cycle before approving for production.

Welt

A strip of fabric or leather used to reinforce a buttonhole or button attachment point on heavy garments such as coats and leather jackets.


Z

Zinc Alloy

The most widely used base metal for fashion buttons. Zinc alloy (also called zamak) is highly moldable, accepts all plating finishes, and offers a good balance of weight, detail, and cost. The base metal of choice for most metal shank buttons in fashion and accessories.
